Idea & Conception

The idea came to Andrew's mind one night in January 2025. The question came to his mind: why do only a very select few get to commentate on sport … why can't anyone commentate? It was a genuine light bulb moment, Andrew sat up in bed and could not get back to sleep.

It had come about as Andrew had began working as a lawyer full-time 6 months earlier. This meant he had no time to engage with one of his favourite sports – the NBA – as it is on during the day. He also had a dream of being a professional basketball commentator.

Andrew told Shafira about it in the morning … she did not immediately get it. But, after a few weeks of thinking it over, she came back and said “wait … that's actually a really good idea”. Little did we know what we had just got ourselves into.

We had NO IDEA what we were doing…

Development Begins

So we got to it! We were convinced we had something here, so we learnt (slowly and painfully sometimes), reiterated and refined the concept and brand identity into a basic version of what we see today – trust us, you do not want to see the initial brand identity … it was orange and purple! We can thank Shafira for that design change (it took some convincing, but she was right). Almost everything you see relating to how the app, website and marketing looks is thanks to her. Andrew has the ideas and Shafira turns them to reality.

After about six months of refinement, we decided to take the plunge.

Embracing the Lean Startup

After a few months of development and after speaking with some mentors and thorough research, we realised our initial vision was far too elaborate, it included full website and marketing design, advertiser websites and many many more unnecessary features. We made the decision to pull back and decided to follow the Lean Startup Method.

We now know that initial design was overly ambitious, but my god did we learn a lot! We had big dreams and there were endless possibilities, but back to the drawing board we went and development started back up again shortly thereafter.

September 2026

Completion of MVP

It may seem like a long time between drinks but there were a lot of kinks that needed ironing out before our MVP was ready and people could start testing. For example, do you know how stats and scores are generated on sporting websites or apps? We didn't! There is a whole industry of sporting API's which run in the background and update all the time.

During this time, we also worked tirelessly on our marketing approach. Andrew got a job as a commentator for the NBL1 to really understand what commentator's need (which is where The Scouting Report idea comes from). Shafira got to work on the design side.

Onward to the Ultimate Goal

Our dream is a sport broadcasting world where it doesn't matter who you are or where you are: you can commentate on your favourite sport, or watch your sports in whatever way you want on the one platform without all the BS that is associated with sport broadcasting these days.

That is what we are working towards. If you like the sound of that, we would be eternally grateful if you could help us get there.
