Idea & Conception
The idea for Commentator came to Andrew one night in January 2025, when he found himself asking a simple question: why do only a select few people get to commentate on sport? Why can't anyone commentate? It was a genuine light-bulb moment. He sat up in bed and couldn't get back to sleep.
Six months earlier, Andrew had started working full-time as a lawyer, which meant he had far less time to follow one of his favourite sports, the NBA, with most games happening during the Australian workday. At the same time, he had always dreamed of becoming a professional basketball commentator. The next morning, he told Shafira his idea. She didn't get it. At least, not straight away. But after sitting with it for a few weeks, she came back to him and said, “Wait… that's actually a really good idea.” And that was the beginning of Commentator.
Little did we know what we had just gotten ourselves into. We had NO IDEA what we were doing. We weren't developers, we hadn't built a tech company before, and neither of us came from the traditional startup world. Andrew was a lawyer, Shafira was an interior designer, and all we really had was an idea we believed was worth figuring out.
Development Begins
So, we got to work! We were convinced we had something, so we started learning (slowly and painfully at times), iterating and refining the concept into a basic version of what you see today. And trust us, you do not want to see the original brand identity… it was orange and purple. We can thank Shafira for changing that one, it took some convincing, but she was right. Almost everything you see today, from the look and feel of the app to the website, brand and marketing, has been shaped by her. Andrew has the ideas, and Shafira finds a way to bring them to life.
After about six months of learning, refining and shaping the idea, we decided it was time to take the plunge.
Embracing the Lean Startup
After a few months of development, conversations with mentors and plenty of research, we realised our initial vision was far too ambitious. We had planned everything from a full web experience and extensive marketing features to advertiser websites, plus many, many more features that, looking back, we simply didn't need yet.
So, we made the decision to pull it right back and embrace the Lean Startup Method: build the simplest version of Commentator that could test our core idea, get it into the hands of real users, learn from them and iterate from there. Was our first version overly ambitious? Absolutely. But my god, did we learn a lot. We had big dreams and could see endless possibilities for what Commentator could become, we just learnt that we didn't need to build all of them at once. So, back to the drawing board we went. We stripped Commentator back to its core, redefined what our MVP actually needed to prove, and development started again shortly after.
Completion of MVP
After months of development, problem-solving and plenty of learning along the way, we reached one of our biggest milestones yet: the completion of our MVP.
We stripped Commentator back to its core purpose and focused on building the essential features needed to test whether our idea works with real users. Throughout development, the platform went through rigorous internal testing and quality assurance to make sure it was ready for the next stage. The MVP is now built and complete. Next comes the part we have been waiting for: putting Commentator into the hands of real users for the first time.
MVP Testing: 10 → 100 Users
We plan to begin with a controlled trial of 10 users, gathering feedback, observing how they interact with the platform and identifying what needs to be improved.
From there, we will refine and iterate before gradually expanding the trial, with the goal of reaching 100 users. This will allow us to validate the concept, understand what our users actually want and make informed decisions about what Commentator should become before moving towards launch.
Onward to the Ultimate Goal
Following the 10 → 100 user trial, we will take everything we have learned and use it to shape the next version of Commentator. User feedback, behaviour and data will help determine which features are improved, removed or introduced for launch. From there, we will open Commentator to a wider audience and begin growing our community of commentators and listeners, with the goal of expanding across new sports, leagues, languages and international markets.
Our dream is to create a sports broadcasting world where it doesn't matter who you are or where you are. Anyone should be able to commentate on the sport they love, and fans should be able to experience sport the way they want, all on one platform, without all the BS that comes with sports broadcasting today.
That is what we are working towards. And if you like the sound of that, we would be eternally grateful if you joined us on the Waitlist. Every person who joins helps us demonstrate that there is a real audience for what we are building, giving us the proof we need as we speak to investors and work towards securing the investment that can help us turn this dream into reality.
